Emergence

As early as 1998, the city of Antwerp decided to build a new museum building in the former port district of Antwerp, the "Eilandje", which would be thematically dedicated to the city, the port of Antwerp and shipping. In 1999 an international architecture competition was announced. The design by the architects Willem Jan Neutelings and Michiel Riedijk (Neutelings Riedijk Architects, Rotterdam ) emerged as the winner among the 55 participants . The foundation stone was laid in 2006. After the construction work was completed, the MAS was officially opened on May 17, 2011 by the Belgian royal couple .

The exhibition rooms of the 62 meter high museum tower are stacked over ten floors in containers or "boxes". Each level is rotated by 90 degrees so that a spiral arrangement results. The galleries in between with corrugated glass surfaces allow changing views of the city and harbor. The facade of the museum, made of reddish Indian sandstone, is decorated with 3000 hands made of polished aluminum, an allusion to the origin of the city name of Antwerp . In the meantime there were cracks in the corrugated glass surfaces produced by the Italian company Sun Glass. Several elements had to be replaced and specialists from the University of Ghent were asked to investigate the cause of the problem.
