Alber Elbaz

Alber Elbaz (born June 12, 1961 in Casablanca , Morocco ; died April 24, 2021 in Neuilly-sur-Seine , Hauts-de-Seine department , France ) was an Israeli fashion designer .

Life

Elbaz grew up in a Jewish family of Moroccan origin. When he was eight months old, his family emigrated from Morocco to Israel , where Elbaz grew up in Cholon . After his school years and his military service in the Israeli army , Elbaz studied from 1982 at the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Ramat Gan , where he obtained a degree in fashion in 1984. After completing his studies, Elbaz moved to New York City in 1985 , where he worked as a designer for wedding dresses for the fashion company George F for four years . From 1989 Elbaz worked for another seven years as an assistant for the fashion designerGeoffrey Beene in New York.

In September 1996, Elbaz moved to the Guy Laroche company in Paris as creative director , where he only stayed for a little over a year. In 1998 he went to Yves Saint-Laurent as a women's fashion designer . When the Saint Laurent company was bought by Gucci at the end of 1999 , the new management replaced Elbaz after three collections in 2000 with Tom Ford . Elbaz then went to Italy, where he worked for Krizia in Milan .

In October 2001, Lanvin , owned by Taiwanese media entrepreneur Shaw-Lan Wang and her Harmonie SA group, hired Elbaz as a women's fashion designer and creative director in Paris. Under Elbaz's direction, Lanvin rose to become a leading French fashion brand, and sales multiplied many times over by 2012. At the end of October 2015, Lanvin announced that Elbaz was leaving the house with immediate effect. Elbaz himself added that his departure was at the instigation of majority owner Wang.

Elbaz's long-time partner was Alex Koo from 1993, Marketing Director at Lanvin since 2006. Elbaz died in April 2021 at the age of 59 of COVID-19 in the American Hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris .
