Via della Spiga

The Via della Spiga is one of the streets in the center of Milan , which the so-called quadrilateral of fashion ( Italian : Quadrilatero della moda ) belongs. In this square in the first district of Milan there are shops of well-known fashion brands and agencies of many companies with luxury articles.

history

According to tradition, the name of the street is derived from the noble family of the Spighi , who were already resident in Milan at the time of the last Duke Francesco II Sforza at the end of the 15th century. Another tradition mentions an inn that gave it its name, which had an ear of wheat , a spiga , in front of the facade .

The current street served as a street for the suppliers, for the removal of waste and as access to small gardens and for the servants of the representative villas with a view of the Naviglio interno canal, which runs parallel to Via della Spiga . The Naviglio was only filled in in the 1930s to make way for a street.

In the 19th century, some of the revolutionaries of the Milan uprising of 1848, the “ Five Days of Milan ”, lived and worked in Via della Spiga in March 1848. The uprising of March 18-22 was directed against the rule of the Austrian kingdom Lombardy and Veneto . One of the rebels was Francesco Restelli , who lived in house number 17 and was sent to Venice to promote the annexation of Veneto to the Kingdom of Sardinia . In house no. 30, Cesare Correnti, as secretary of the Provisional Government, wrote the insurgents' manifesto. A plaque on the new Garzanti publishing house built in 1944 by the Milanese architect Gio Ponti commemorates this event . This resided here and in house no.28 until 1996.

Changes since the 1960s

At the beginning of the 1960s, Via della Spiga was still a street for the common people with bakeries, slaughterhouses, hairdressers, etc. In the course of the next few decades, however, boutiques, restaurants and branches of world-famous fashion houses settled there. B. Prada or Dolce & Gabbana , as well as design and furniture stores such. B. Nilufar . The street became a pedestrian zone with paving, the lighting is now LED , it is described as environmentally friendly.
