Francesco II. Sforza ( February 4, 1495 - October 24, 1535 ) was the younger son of Duke Ludovico Sforza of Milan and Beatrice d'Este and the last sovereign Duke of Milan in history.

Life

When his father was in 1499 by the French King Louis XII. was overthrown and imprisoned in Loches Castle, Francesco fled with his older brother Massimiliano to the court of Emperor Maximilian , who was married to his cousin Bianca Maria Sforza .

Massimiliano was reinstated by the Swiss in Milan in 1512 , but after the devastating defeat of his allies in the Battle of Marignano in 1515, he ceded his rights to Francis I of France (ruled 1515–1547) for a pension of 30,000 ducats and died in 1530 in Paris .

Francesco took Milan after the defeat of the French in the Battle of Bicocca in 1522 in possession and in 1526 joined the League of Cognac against Emperor Charles V (ruled 1519–1555). He was unpopular because of his tax collection. In 1533, as a seriously ill man, he married the twelve-year-old niece of Emperor Christina of Denmark by procurationem . However, since he died on October 24, 1535, the direct male line of the Sforza ended with him . The duchy of Milan passed to the emperor .
