Count Eberhard zu Stolberg-Wernigerode (born March 11, 1810 in Peterswaldau , † August 8, 1872 in Johannisbad ) was a German conservative politician and a Prussian civil servant.

Life

Eberhard was the eldest son of Count Anton zu Stolberg-Wernigerode and his wife Luise, née Freiin von der Recke . He grew up at Kreppelhof Castle in Silesia . He received his first education from a private tutor . Later he attended the educational establishment in Bunzlau and the grammar school in Glogau.

In 1830 he joined the Prussian Army and served in the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment . In 1836, Stolberg-Wernigerode became Prince Wilhelm of Prussia's second personal adjutant . In 1841 he was promoted to lieutenant prime minister.

Stolberg-Wernigerode had been with Marie Wilhelmine Johanna (1822–1903), daughter of Prince Heinrich LX, since May 26, 1842. Reuss younger line , married. The marriage remained childless. After his death, the property fell to his nephew, Count Udo zu Stolberg-Wernigerode .

After his marriage, he retired from active military service as Rittmeister in 1842. In 1847 he was a member of the united state parliament . On this he met Otto von Bismarck and remained connected to him. During the revolution of 1848/49 he was active in anti-revolutionary political circles. In 1849 he was elected to the second chamber of the Prussian state parliament by four districts in Silesia . He was also elected district administrator in the Landshut district . He held this office for ten years.

In 1852 he was involved as a witness in the duel between Vincke and Bismarck . After the death of his father in 1854, he became majorate of the Kreppelhof estate. In 1853 he became a member of the Prussian manor house . A short time later he was Vice President and from 1862 President of the House. He held this position until his death.

He was a co-founder and in 1861/62 first chairman of the conservative Prussian People's Association . Between 1867 and 1869 he was a member of the Reichstag of the North German Confederation . There he belonged to the Conservatives. From 1869 to 1872 he was President of the Prussian Province of Silesia .

Stolberg-Wernigerode was appointed Chancellor of the Protestant branch of the Order of St. John in 1852 . In 1856 he became Commendator for Silesia. During the German-Danish War of 1864 he placed the order in the service of the army. So hospitals were built in Altona , Flensburg and Kolding . In 1866 he was appointed military inspector for voluntary nursing (based in Berlin ). He himself took part in the 1866 campaign in Bohemia . He refused a similar position during the war of 1870/71 . In January 1871 he traveled to France and brought Wilhelm I the congratulations of the Prussian mansion.

He bore the title of a Royal Prussian Real Privy Council . He was also lieutenant general à la suite in the army and, from 1869, first chief hunter and head of the royal hunting office.
