Edwin Atherstone (* 1788 in Nottingham ; † 1872 ) was an English romantic poet .

Life

Atherstone was born in Nottingham and was one of the fifteen children of dyer Hugh Atherstone and his wife Ann Green. Edwin Atherstone was cohabiting with Mary Wainwright Pearson and had four children, three daughters and a son. His most famous poem, The Fall of Nineveh (The destruction of Nineveh ), consists of thirty volumes. The epic tells of the war between the Medes and Babylonians, the death of the tyrannical king Sardanapal and the destruction of Nineveh. The main heroes are Arbaces, Prince of Media, and Belesis, Priest of Babylon. The second great epic is Israel in Egypt . He also wrote two novels: The sea-kings in England ( The kings of the sea in England ) and The handwriting on the Wall ( The handwriting on the wall ). Edwin Atherstone was a friend of the painter John Martin.
