Thomas Vowler Short (born September 16, 1790 in Dawlish , England , † April 13, 1872 in Gresford , Wales ) was a British clergyman and writer. From 1841 to 1846 he held the office of Bishop of Sodor und Man , after which he was Bishop of St Asaph from 1846 to 1870 .

Life

Short was born in 1790 to the Archdeacon of Cornwall , William Short. Having schools in Exeter and Westminster had visited, he enrolled in 1809 in the Christ Church College of Oxford University , a. In 1813 the Bishop of Oxford consecrated him as a deacon ; a year later he took up the post of perpetual curate in Drayton , Oxfordshire , which he quickly gave up. In 1829 Short moved to Kings Worthy in Hampshire . The Lord Chancellor of the United Kingdom, Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux , offered him the office of parish priest of St George's Church in Bloomsbury - now part of London - which he accepted. In 1837 he completed his studies with a doctorate in theology ; in the same year he was appointed Deputy Clerk of the Closet to Queen Victoria .

In 1841 Short succeeded Henry Pepys , Bishop of Sodor and Man; its seat was on the Isle of Man . In 1846 he was transferred to the Welsh St Asaph on the advice of John Russell , where he served as bishop for the next 24 years. Two years after his resignation, in 1872, Short died at the age of 81 in Gresford Parish. The funeral took place in St Asaph.

Although the Oxford Movement only gained influence after Short left university, he was close friends with Edward Bouverie Pusey and John Keble , both of whom were leaders of the movement; Another member, John Henry Newman , passed his diploma examination with him.

During his tenure as bishop, both at Man and at St Asaph, Short's primary focus was on educational issues. He particularly supported the building of new schools in his diocese; when he resigned his episcopal office in St Asaph, every parish in his sphere of influence had a school building.
