Bedros Tourian
Bedros Tourian or Dourian ( Armenian Պետրոս Դուրեան Petros Tourean , reformed Պետրոս Դուրյան Petros Duryán ; born May 20, 1851 in Istanbul , † January 21, 1872 ) was a famous Armenian poet, screenwriter and actor. He was a romantic poet with great sensitivity and had a large following in his short lifetime. He wrote in Western Armenian and was considered a patriot because his historical dramas were inspired by a yearning for national liberation.
Bedros Tourian was the older brother of Yeghic Tourian , Patriarch of Constantinople and later of Jerusalem .
Life
Bedros Dourian was born into a poor Armenian family, the father of the family was a blacksmith in the Ottoman capital Istanbul . Dourian's school teacher was the satirist Hagop Baronian . Trained in French , Dourian was well-read in Hugo , Lamartine and de Musset and brought a lyrical and sentimental quality to his poetry. Spontaneous, eloquent and enriched with images and metaphors, his poems reveal an artistic brilliance and pave the way for innovations from the old style of writing. Critics attested Dourian the creation of a new modern tradition of poetry in verse. His poems have been translated into Italian , German , Russian , French and English .
The Armenian theater was his passion and, despite his father's opposition, he pursued an active theatrical life, writing plays and performing on the stage. Given his family's poverty, the financial advantage that acting gave him can be a factor in defying his father's wishes. Some of his plays are “Black Lands” (1868), “Artashes, the Peacekeeper” (1969), “Overthrow of the House of Arshakids” (1870), “Captures Ani, the capital of Armenia” (1871) and “Theater or Outsider ”(1871). “Theater or Outsider” (or “Wretched People”) deals with the issue of social injustice and moral decline. In the play, two lovers commit suicide on stage. The story is more reminiscent of Dourian in his poetry than in his dramas, although originally his dramas earned him fame during his lifetime.
The poem Kleiner See is an allusion to the fact that Tourian, who was in love with an actress, gave her contemptuous answer “Him? He's shaking and so pale - he might even die one of these days! " (which he did) overheard.
He died of tuberculosis at the age of 20 .
