Etymology and history

The name Ehrenberg comes from the forest area Mehrenberger Mark, whose short form Im Mehrenberg around 1800 was dismantled to Im Ehrenberg. The name of the Markwald was transferred to the mountain and the two settlement areas located on the summit. Mehrenberg's interpretation is not clear. It could be derived from Berg des Mero or a form of the Celtic word Mir (= mountain ).

As early as 1359, three Ehrenberger Höfe that were independent of the Oberhof were mentioned in a document. At the time they belonged to the Langerfeld peasantry of the Wetter district in the county of Mark . The mention of a fourth Ehrenberger Hof in the same year in a document from the Beyenburger Steinhaus monastery as its property is questionable. In 1550 two Ehrenberger Höfe are mentioned as part of the Göckinghof Villication , which was owned by the Siegen Abbey .

The location is marked on the situation chart of the Fabrickendistricts in the high court of Schwelm from 1788 as Auf dem vordersten Ehrenberg , on the map of the Langerfeld municipality from 1825 and on the Prussian first recording from 1840/44 as Auf dem vordersten Ehrenberge , on the Wuppertal city map from 1930 as the Ehrenberg district .

In the 19th century, Vorderer Ehrenberg belonged to the rural community of Langerfeld in the district of Hagen (until 1887) and the district of Schwelm (from 1887), which formed its own office and was incorporated into the town of Barmen , today a district of Wuppertal, on August 5, 1922 .

In the municipality lexicon for the province of Westphalia from 1887, 19 houses with 242 inhabitants are given for the Ehrenberg hamlet.
