Reinder Pieters van Calcar (born October 11, 1872 in Veenwouden , † April 23, 1957 in Leiden ) was a Dutch bacteriologist.

Life

Reinder Pieters was the son of pastor Hendrik van Calcar (born September 15, 1838 in Nieuwolda; † November 18, 1915) and his wife Fenna Tjabbina Westerdijk (born January 25, 1848 in Assen). He had attended the high school in Sneek and in 1892 began studying medicine at the University of Amsterdam . After completing this degree in 1896, he was appointed doctor on November 6, 1897. He then worked at various hospitals and became a family doctor in the Amsterdam district of Jordaan . On March 15, 1905, he was appointed professor of health science and political medicine at the University of Leiden . He took on this task on September 26, 1905 with the introductory speech Het hedendaagsch standpunt van het Toxine-vraagstuk (German: The current position of the toxin problem ) and became director of the Laboratory for Hygiene and Bacteriology.

Calcar had gained fame mainly because he developed a process for the production of artificial feed during the First World War, for which a factory was set up in Leiden. In the academy year 1920/21 he was rector of the Alma Mater , for which he gave the rector's speech on February 8, 1921, Over de ontwikkeling en de beteekenis der moderne bacteriologie (German: On the development and importance of modern bacteriology ). On October 30, 1935, he submitted his release and was retired on January 1, 1936 by royal decision.
