Jane Atché
Jane Atché (born August 16, 1872 in Toulouse , † February 6, 1937 in Paris ) was a French painter, graphic artist and poster artist of Art Nouveau . She was artistically active from 1895 to 1912.
life and work
Jane Atché's family came from the municipality of Rabastens in the Tarn department . Her father William was an infantry captain. Born Jeanne Atché, she Anglicized her name to Jane. She came to Paris around 1890 and studied at the Académie Julian with Jean-Paul Laurens and Marcel Baschet . She was also influenced by Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant .
Atché made his debut in 1895 at the Salon des Artistes Francais with a pastel girl with violets . In November 1896, at the age of 24, she issued her poster for JOB cigarette paper , which brought her an unexpected success. At the "poster exhibition of French and foreign art" she came into contact with Alphonse Mucha and adopted his style. Jane Atché was the only woman among French poster artists.
Jane Atché regularly showed her graphics and lithographs in salons from 1897 to 1911. Around 1900 the affair with Alphonse Mucha came to an end. She turned to religious subjects. Fiat voluntas tua got her an honorable mention at a 1902 salon. From 1901 to 1905 she illustrated a monthly magazine for girls.
Her sister Louise died in 1905 and her father in January 1907. She then decided not to take part in the 1905, 1906 and 1907 salons. On December 28, 1905, Atché married Raymond Leroux, who was five years his junior. He was mobilized in the First World War in 1914 and fell on the Marne on July 15, 1918. On April 20, 1920, she married an old friend, the widower Arsène Bonnaire. After 1923 the couple moved to Rabastens to retire there.
