Marcel Baschet
Marcel-André Baschet (born August 5, 1862 in Gagny ( Département Seine-et-Oise ); † December 28, 1941 in Paris ) was a French portrait painter and illustrator .
Life
Marcel Baschet was born in 1862 as the second son of the art editor Ludovic Baschet (1834–1909) and his wife Julie Antoinette Elise, b. Vendryes (1837-1892).
He began his training in Paris in 1879 at the Académie Julian with Jules Lefebvre . Then he was at the École des Beaux Arts with Gustave Boulanger . For his picture Oedipus condemned Polynices he received the Grand Prix de Rome in 1883 . This scholarship enabled him to stay at the French Academy in Rome in the Villa Medici from 1884 to 1887 .
Baschet became a teacher at the Académie Julian in 1889. For his portrait of the writer Henri Rochefort , he won the medal d'honneur in the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1908 . In 1898 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor (Légion d'honneur), and in 1913 a Commander. In 1913 he was also elected a member of the Institut de France and the Académie des Beaux-Arts (Chair 6 of Section (I) for Painting).
From 1907 to 1941, Baschet had his studio at 21, Quai Voltaire in the 7th arrondissement , a plaque commemorates this.
family
Marcel Baschet was married to Jeanne Guillemeteau from 1888, they had the son Paul Baschet (1888–1966) and a daughter. Baschet himself had three siblings; the brothers René Baschet (1860–1949), director of the magazine L'Illustration from 1904 to 1944, and Jacques Baschet (1872–1952), art historians and sister Andrée Baschet (1875–1950). In addition to his work as an art editor, his father Ludovic Baschet (1834–1909) was also a painter, gallery owner and editor of the magazines Panorama and La Revue Illustrée .
