Life

Due to the profession of his father, a military doctor, Richepin was born in the Algerian Médéa (also Lemdiyya). The Richepin family originally came from Hirson in Thiérache . In Douai , also in northern France , he attended school and then switched to the École normal supérieure . He completed his literary studies in 1870. In the Franco-Prussian War , Richepin served as a sniper under General Charles Denis Bourbaki .

That of the revolutionary ideas Jules Vallès enthusiastic Richepin joined in 1871 in Paris the poet circle Cercle des poètes Zutiques to Charles Cros , Paul Verlaine , Arthur Rimbaud and Léon Valade on. He worked with them on the album Zutique , a collection of 24 mostly crude and obscene parody verses. The following four years of life in his biography are unclear, which Richepin could also have invented to underpin his daredevil and to exaggerate his masculinity. Afterwards, after a stopover with the family now living in Nancy , he traveled from Burgundy with gypsies to Italy. In Naples and later in Bordeaux , he is said to have worked as a dock worker and also as a sailor. During this time, journalistic articles such as Mot d'Ordre , Au Corsaire and La Vérité appeared . Together with the caricaturist André Gill (1840–1885), his first play appeared in 1873 with L'Étoile . In 1875 Richepin returned to Paris and settled in the Latin Quarter . Here he frequented the artist's bars and met the writers Raoul Ponchon , Maurice Rollinat , Paul Bourget and Léon Bloy .

For a time Richepin lived in the Villa Guibert, a private street on the Rue de la Tour in Paris- Passy .

Richepin became famous in 1876 with the Chanson des gueux assembly , which was banned from publication due to its coarseness. Richepin was imprisoned on short notice and had to pay a fine of 500 francs for outrage aux mœurs (insulting morals). His following verses Les Caresses , Les Blasphèmes , La Mer , Mes paradis and La Bombarde were written with a similar directness .

His novels Les morts bizarres , La Glu and Le Pavé are characterized by brutality and morbidity. Later works such as Madame André , Sophie Monnier , Cisarine , L'Aîné , Grandes amoureuses and La Gibasse show a well thought-out psychology. Simpler biography can be found in Miarka , Les Braves im Gens , Truandailles , La Miseloque and in Flamboche . The latter served César Cui as a template for his opera of the same name.

Richepin had great success with his plays, many of which were performed at the Comédie-Française . In 1883 his play Nana Sahib with Sarah Bernhardt in the leading role premiered here. In 1897 his play Le chemineau also met with great acclaim.
