Sigismund's advance to Linköping

The Battle of Stångebro took place near Linköping on September 25, 1598 and in fact ended the personal union between Poland-Lithuania and the Kingdom of Sweden , which had existed since 1592.

In this battle the Swedish army defeated the Polish-Swedish King Sigismund III with approx. 13,000 men under the leadership of Duke Karl . Wasa and his army of about 8,000 men.

King Sigismund was then deposed in 1599 by a resolution of the Swedish Diet. The outcome of the battle established the Swedish-Polish opposition (antagonism) that lasted into the 17th century and the struggle for supremacy in the Baltic States , which culminated in the Swedish-Polish War of 1600-1629 .
