Georges Plasse

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georges Plasse (* 1878 in Paris ; † 1948 ) was a French painter.

Plasse studied with Cormon , Paul Thomas and Marcel André Baschet . From 1907 he belonged to the artistes françaises and worked for the Salon des artistes français , the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries . He received a number of awards.

Presumably he came to the United States in the early 1920s. In the 1920s he had contact with Cornelia Bentley Sage Quinton , who was the first woman in the USA to head a major art museum.

Plasse's works were partly printed. In 1904 La dame aux breloques of Georges Thurner out with a cover drawing by Georges Plasse. The title page of Le Gaulois du Dimanche No. 175 of September 14, 1912 shows his picture Promenade sur l'eau . The cover picture of the September issue of Theater magazine from 1922 also comes from Plasse's pen. He designed - probably in the 1920s - a frontispiece for Edward Francis O'Day's work Claude Garamond and His Place in the Renaissance , which came out in 1940. In 1930 and 1933 he painted pictures for Moët & Chandon . The menus of the ship Lafayette, which burned out in 1938, and other ships belonging to the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique were also decorated with etchings by Plasse; Furthermore, the card games of this company were adorned with creations by Plasse and in 1938 several calendars were printed with heliogravures after pictures by Georges Plasse.
