Rabastens is a French commune in the Tarn department in the Occitanie region with 5620 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). It is located in the arrondissement of Albi and is also the capital of the canton of Vignobles et Bastides . The inhabitants are called Rabastinois (Sing./Pl. Masc.) Or Rabastinoises (Pl. Fem.).

geography

Rabastens lies on the Tarn between Toulouse and Albi . The A68 autoroute runs through the municipality . Rabastens-Coufouleux station (in the neighboring municipality of Coufouleux ) is on the Brive – Toulouse railway line .

history

The Gallo-Roman settlement here was soon replaced by the Visigoths . Their fortifications controlled the route from Toulouse to Lyon . At the end of the 12th century and beginning of the 13th century, the city was a stronghold of the Cathars . In the Albigensian Crusade she was loyal to Raymond VII of Toulouse . After a period of prosperity, a massacre followed in 1337 during the Hundred Years War , which was followed by a plague epidemic in 1348.
