Vieux ( Occitan : Vius ) is a southern French municipality with 224 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Tarn department in the Occitanie region .

location

Vieux is located in the Vère valley about 30 kilometers (driving distance) northwest of Albi or 15 kilometers north of the wine village of Gaillac . The former Bastide Castelnau-de-Montmiral is only about eight kilometers to the south-west.

In the 19th century the place always had between 320 and 500 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture resulted in job losses and, as a result, a steady decline in the population.

economy

Today the community lives primarily from agriculture and forestry as well as from handicrafts and small businesses. Since the 1960s, tourism has also played a role in the form of vacation rental.

history

The area was evidently inhabited as early as the Neolithic Age, as a menhir still stands in the middle of a field in the area . A document from the 10th century mentions an 'abbot of Saint-Eugène' with the name Adalard - the existence of the place seems to be related to a long-lost monastery. The relics of several regionally venerated martyrs were venerated here, but they were transferred from Vieux to Albi Cathedral in 1494 as part of a relic translation .

Attractions

  • The parish church ( Église Saint-Eugène ) built in the 14th century impresses with its west tower, which is square at the bottom and octagonal at the top; the arcades of the two upper floors are offset from one another. The interior of the six-bay nave (width: approx. Ten meters / height: approx. Twelve meters) is vaulted and has side chapels. The church building has been recognized as a monument historique since 1906 .
  • About 600 meters to the southwest, in the middle of a field, stands a three-meter high menhir ( peyra lébada ) from the time of the megalithic cultures . Its age is likely to be around 6000 years. It has also been recognized as a Monument historique since 1977 .
