Arthès is a French commune with 2,498 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Tarn department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Albi and the canton of Saint-Juéry (until 2015: canton of Albi-Nord-Est ). The inhabitants are called Arthésiens .

geography

Arthès is located about five kilometers northeast of the center of Albi on the edge of the Cevennes Mountains. The Tarn River forms the southern boundary of the municipality. Arthès is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saussenac in the north and northeast, Saint-Grégoire in the east, Saint-Juéry in the south and Lescure-d'Albigeois in the west.

history

The place was founded in 1319/1328 as a church bastide .
