Robert Franz Arnold , until 1895 Robert Franz Levisohn (born November 27, 1872 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary , † January 24, 1938 in Vienna), was an Austrian literary historian and librarian .

Life

Levissohn studied German in Berlin and received his doctorate in Vienna in 1895 . He also changed his name. Arnold initially worked as custodian for the imperial-royal court library, after his habilitation in 1906 as professor of literary history at the University of Vienna and in 1934 and 1936 as a visiting professor at Stanford University. He also worked as a book and theater critic. In 1932 he gave the speech at the Goethe celebration of the Austrian federal government. From 1936 until his death he was President of the Austrian Goethe Society .

Services

His research focus was on political poetry and the border areas of poetry, and he was also one of the first to deal with the medium of film in the field of theater studies. His most important works include the Allgemeine Bücherkunde zur recent German literary history 1910 (3rd edition 1931), and the collective work Das deutsche Drama from 1925, published with specialist colleagues , which was the first complete presentation of this genre.
