Life

Karl Bernhard Hundeshagen was a son of the forest scientist and "forest classic" Johann Christian Hundeshagen (1783–1834). He studied in Gießen , became a member of the old Gießen fraternity Germania in 1825 and (after being forced to de-register because of his membership in the fraternity ) in Halle (Saale) theology and qualified as a professor at the University of Gießen in 1831 for the subjects of church history and exegesis . In the autumn of 1834 he accepted a call as associate professor at the University of Bern , where he held the rectorate in 1841/42 and rose to a full professorship in 1845. In 1847 he went to Heidelberg University as a full professor . After a conflict with the Baden regional church , he accepted an appointment at the University of Bonn in the fall of 1867 .

Hundeshagen's main research interests were the church history of the Middle Ages and the Reformation (especially the Swiss Reformation history) as well as comparative denominational studies . In addition, he expressed himself on church issues of the time. His anonymously published work Der deutsche Protestantismus, seine Past und seine heute Lebensfragen (1847), in which Hundeshagen called for church reform on a presbyterial - synodal basis and hoped for a renewal of national life , was much discussed . In terms of mediation theology , he fought against theological Hegelianism , but also all attempts at a denominational or state church restoration . Hundeshagen stood up for the union of the main Protestant denominations of Lutheranism and Reformedism out of conviction , but turned against the relativization of the confessional writings of the Reformation period.
