Eike Wolgast
Eike Wolgast (born September 8, 1936 in Ludwigslust ) is a German historian . From 1976 until his retirement in 2004 he taught in Heidelberg as a full professor of modern history.
Live and act
Eike Wolgast passed his Abitur in Parchim in 1955 . From 1956 to 1962 he studied history, philosophy and Latin philology at the Universities of Göttingen and Heidelberg. In 1963 he received his doctorate in Göttingen with the work Die Wittenberger Luther-Ausgabe. On the transmission history of the works of Luther in the 16th century. From 1963 to 1968 Wolgast was a research assistant at the commission for the publication of Luther's works . Wolgast worked in Göttingen from 1971 to 1974 as a research assistant. There, in the 1973/74 winter semester, he also received his habilitation on Wittenberg theology and the politics of the Protestant estates. From 1974 to 1976 he was a university professor and professor there. From 1976 until his retirement in 2004 he taught in Heidelberg as a full professor of modern history.
His main research interests are the political and confessional history of the Electoral Palatinate in the early modern period, late humanism , the history of Heidelberg University in the 16th to 20th centuries, and Baden university policy in the 19th century. Wolgast published a widely acclaimed biography about Thomas Müntzer . In 1995 Wolgast presented a study on Hochstift and the Reformation . On the occasion of the 600th university anniversary, Wolgast published a history of Heidelberg University from 1386 to 1986. In 2001 he published a study on the perception of National Socialism in the immediate post-war period. In 2004, together with Folker Reichert , Wolgast published Karl Hampe's war diary from the First World War. It is considered an important source for the history of culture and mentality during the First World War. With Volker Sellin and Wolfgang U. Eckart , Wolgast published a 1200-page anthology in 2006 on the University of Heidelberg under National Socialism.
Wolgast was awarded numerous scientific honors and memberships for his research. He is a full member of the Commission for Historical Regional Studies in Baden-Württemberg (since 1987), a full member of the Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (since 1988), a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences (since 1995) and a full member in the Historical Commission for Mecklenburg (since 1996). For the historical commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences he publishes the German Reichstag files middle series and younger series. In 1984 Wolgast was visiting professor at the Beijing Foreign Language University . In 2011 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Theological Faculty of the University of Copenhagen .
