Life
Lutz was born in very poor circumstances. The authorities brought the child to the civic orphanage in the city of Bern at the age of ten . At the age of 16, in 1801, he came to live with his paternal grandmother and attended high school in Bern. He then went to the Bern Academy to study theology . While still a student he accepted a position as a private tutor , which in 1807 swapped it for a position as elementary school teacher. After passing with distinction theological examination took place on 10 May 1808 his ordination . He was then able to study ancient languages for one year at the University of Tübingen on a scholarship , then for one semester at the University of Göttingen General Philology and Theology.
In 1812 Lutz became professor of ancient languages at the Bern high school. Despite his successful teaching, he fell out with the education authority in 1824. He gave up his teaching post and became pastor of Wynau . In 1830 he was elected pastor of the Heiliggeistkirche in Bern, and in 1834 he moved to the University of Bern, where he was given the full professorship for exegesis. From 1833 he was a professor at the academy. During this time he also served from 1834 to 1838 Dean of the Faculty of Theology, from 1840 until his death dean of the Bernese chapter and temporarily president of the Synod . From 1831 to 1837 he held the office of Education Council for the Canton of Bern . Shortly before his death, he turned down a call to the chair of practical theology.
Lutz was awarded an honorary doctorate ( Dr. theol. Hc ) by the University of Basel in 1835 .
