Joseph Alexander Ames (born 1816 in Roxbury , New Hampshire ; died 1872 in New York City ) was an American portrait painter .

life and work

Ames studied in America and later in Rome in Italy. He worked in Boston , Baltimore and later in New York City. In 1869 he became an associate of the National Academy of Design , and a year later he was an academician. In 1855 Ames was a founding member of the Boston Art Club and was elected its first president.

His best known works included "The Death of Webster" and Portrait of Abraham Lincoln and James Topham Brady in the Metropolitan Museum . The picture of a gypsy girl is in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston .
