- Jules Verne publishes the novel Aventures de trois Russes et de trois Anglais dans l'Afrique australe ( Adventures of three Russians and three Englishmen in South Africa ) by Pierre-Jules Hetzel .
- From Tolstoy the narrative appear Prisoner of the Caucasus , as well as short stories Jermak and the conquest of Siberia and an exile .
- Julius Stinde had the "police novel " In eiserner Faust , an early example of German crime literature , published by August Prinz in Altona under the pseudonym J. Steinmann . Only one copy of the work has survived.
- The Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz publishes the novella Na marne ( Splintered ).
- By Theodor Storm , the amendment appears Outside in Heidedorf .
- Friedrich Gerstäcker published Im Eckfenster .
- The Haideprinzeschen by E. Marlitt appears as a book edition.
- The Princess and the Goblin is published by George MacDonald .

- January 3 : Ivan Turgenev's play A Month in the Country premieres at Moscow's Maly Theater .
- October 12th : Ludwig Anzengruber's play Die Kreuzelschreiber has its world premiere at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The music for the peasant comedy with singing comes from Adolf Müller senior .

- The daily newspaper The Boston Globe is founded. The first issue will appear on March 4th .
- March 24th : The first edition of the illustrated Wiener Extrablattes , which was published until 1928 - at times one of the highest-circulation Austrian newspapers - appears in Vienna.
