The novel Im Eckfenster by Friedrich Gerstäcker appeared in 1870 as a serial in the Kölnische Zeitung of the DuMont publishing house, Cologne , and was published in four volumes by H. Costenoble, Jena, in 1872.

Background and content

As the Gerstäcker research was able to show, the novel in Braunschweig is set mainly around the local Hagenmarkt . The scenes are the Hagenmarkt pharmacy , which still exists there , the "corner window" itself is a fictional bar on the site of today's residents' registration office.

The aristocratic globetrotter Hans von Solberg returns home in time to expose a criminal together with the notary Püster and his assistants.

The work, which was created in 56 working days and carefully considered the milieu, is one of the first German detective novels of the 19th century with an investigator who takes on the investigation and solves the case as a detective.
