The Hagenmarkt pharmacy in Braunschweig was founded in 1677. Although the original pharmacy building from the late 16th century was so badly damaged in the Second World War that it had to be demolished in 1949, the pharmacy is still operated today at the same location in Weichbild Hagen on the north side of Hagenmarkt and the corner of Wendenstrasse .

history

Engraving by Johann Georg Beck (1718)

The first pharmacies or facilities that performed the usual tasks of a pharmacy have been recorded in Braunschweig since the year 1300 or shortly before that. In 1479 the city council founded the “ Rats-Apotheke ” on the corner of the egg market and the cookshop . All private pharmacies operated up to then were officially abolished, but de facto continued to exist in some cases as "corner pharmacies". In 1677, Braunschweig had around 22,500 inhabitants, the Hagenmarkt pharmacy followed as the second “ privileged ” establishment in the city. In 1720 the farm pharmacy at Schuhstrasse  4 was added and in 1750 the last pharmacy was finally founded, the Aegidien-Apotheke at Aegidienmarkt  66. Without further pharmacies following, these four facilities only existed in the city until 1889. In 1772 the original four pharmacies were transferred to private hands. In the summer of 1864 this circumstance was repealed by law. Only after 1889 were other pharmacies added. Of the original four, two still exist today, the one on Hagenmarkt and the Hof-Apotheke on Schuhstrasse.

History of origin

In 1677, Duke Rudolf August von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel granted the pharmacist Andreas Zacharias Happe the privilege “cum spe succendi” for 15 years with exemption from taxes and oneribus civicis et militaribus and the right to import all goods free of charge for 125 thalers. Recognition to open a pharmacy in Braunschweig .

Building until 1945

The building at Hagenmarkt 20 ( insurance number 1409) was initially erected in the 13th century as a massive building with stones from nearby Nussberg and was extensively redesigned around 1590, probably by Augustin von Peine, the great mayor of Hagen. According to Meier and Steinacker, there were remains of a bower in the western part of the house . The house had two entrances, a large Renaissance - Portal on the turning road through which carts came up in a courtyard and a small, from Wolter Hasemann from Elmkalkstein created and given only for pedestrians baroque splendor portal on the market side. This portal had two seating niches , a coat of arms and was decorated with scrollwork . The depicted coat of arms was that of the soft picture Hagen: the Brunswick lion with the Katharinenrad . The large, rich with pinna plant ornate gate from 1639 originally came from Hagen Keller and was built in the late 19th century to the turn of the road. The windows had a rod of pearl as a decoration . The third floor consisted of half-timbering and had a width of 18 spans on the market side and 17 spans on the Wendenstrasse side.

Building since 1951

The pharmacy portal created by Wolter Hasemann is now on the north side of the Gewandhaus .

The old building, in which both the Hagenmarkt-Apotheke and the bank were located, was so badly damaged during the Second World War by bombing raids by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and the US Army Air Force that the ruins were demolished around 1949 and in 1951 a modern new building was built, in which the pharmacy has been located since August 1951. Only the portal created by Hasemann was saved and built into the north facade of the heavily damaged Gewandhaus on the old town market in 1949/50 , where it is still located today.
