history

The Aegidienmarkt was created as the market square of the Altewiek, on it was also the Altewiek town hall . With the dissolution of the independence of the Weichbilde in Braunschweig in the 17th century, it was no longer needed and was finally demolished in 1752. In its place, the new aegidien cellar was built in 1754 according to the plans of Georg Christoph Sturm . a. known from lottery events and as the house where Gotthold Ephraim Lessing died and was therefore also referred to as the lottery house and Lessing house or Lessing's house where he died.

On the 100th anniversary of the death of the poet Friedrich Schiller was on a triangular traffic island on the Ägidienmarkt on May 14, 1905 Schiller oak planted.

The many half-timbered houses on the Aegidia market, including the Aegidia cellar, were destroyed in the bombing of the Second World War . Some stone houses remained, as well as a half-timbered rear building, which is known today as the Auctorhaus. This condition persisted for a long time. When the road was widened in 1959, the black oak was also felled. It was not until the 1970s that new buildings were built on the square, for which the old structures were also torn down. In addition, the road was widened through the Aegidia market as a new main traffic axis. In 1976, as an extension of the Auctorhaus, the Leisewitz-Haus was moved from Wallstrasse to Agidienmarkt. Since then it has been used together with the Auctorhaus as the parish hall of the parish of St. Aegidien.

From 2016 to 2017 the aegidia market was redesigned and ceremoniously opened to the public on October 27, 2017.
