from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The August Road is a main road in the city of Brunswick. It is part of the new Braunschweig city ring. Auguststraße runs from the Aegidienmarkt to John F. Kennedy Square .

history

The name Auguststraße comes from more recent times. In 1338 the street was mentioned under the name vor sunte Iliendore , in 1480 as vor sunte Egidiendore . With the opening of the new August Gate, which was named in honor of Duke August Wilhelm , the street was renamed Vor dem Augustthore . In 1813 the name was changed to Am Augustthore . Since 1857 the street has been called Auguststrasse .

In 1890 the Augusta drugstore opened at 28 Auguststrasse. In January 1939, the Korbsche Haus (tax office) at Auguststrasse 6 was renovated. During the 23rd air raid on the city of Braunschweig on August 5, 1944, Auguststrasse was also hit.

At the end of the 1950s, Auguststrasse was widened and the buildings on the west side demolished. The southern part of Auguststrasse, the southern end of which was originally east of Wolfenbüttler Strasse, was widened so far to the west that the lanes led directly into Wolfenbüttler Strasse.

On May 10, 1967, the tax office moved from buildings 6–8 to its new building in Altewiekring 20. On December 7, 1984, the Office for Agricultural Structure in Auguststrasse 6 celebrated its 150th anniversary.

From the 1960s to the 1990s, the buildings on Auguststrasse were rebuilt. On July 30, 1968, the new Nordstern-Versicherung building was opened. The last vacant lot was closed from 1993 to 1995 with the construction of a new hotel complex at Auguststrasse 6-8. The preserved eastern part of the Korbsche House was included. Most of the building was demolished after the Second World War. The foundation stone was laid on June 3, 1993.

On February 14, 1990, the social welfare office of the city of Braunschweig opened at Auguststrasse 9-10.
