Poetry

  • Late summer: The collection of poems Les Chants de Maldoror ( The Chants of Maldoror ) , written by Isidore Lucien Ducasse under the pseudonym Lautréamont , was already in print when the publisher Albert Lacroix refused to publish it at the last moment for fear of censorship. Ducasse thereupon asks the publisher Auguste Poulet-Malassis , who published Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil in 1857 , to send review copies to the literary critics, as they alone “judge the beginning of a publication that will certainly see its end later, when I've seen mine ” . He tries to explain his position and even offers to delete some “too strong passages” for future editions . The first song of Maldoror has been anonymously published last year in Paris and in January this year in the anthology Parfums de l'Ame , published by Evariste Carrance in Bordeaux appeared.

Original edition The Subjection of Women
  • Under the name of John Stuart Mill , the essay appears The Subjection of Women ( The Subjection of Women ). The work is the result of the thoughts and ideas that Mill, together with his future wife Harriet Taylor Mill, discussed and developed over two decades. His stepdaughter Helen Taylor is mostly, but not always, named as a co-author today. The subject of the essay, considered one of the most important works of 19th century feminist theory , is a fundamental critique of the unequal social status of women. The work arouses enthusiasm as well as ridicule and severe criticism.
