Levon Schant
Levon Shant ( Armenian Լեւոն Շանթ , born with the family name Նահաշպետեան Nahashbedian , later changed to Սեղբոսեան Seghposian ; born April 6, 1869 in Istanbul , † November 29, 1951 in Beirut ) was an Armenian playwright , writer , poet and founder of the “ Foundation of the national culture ”.
Seghposian grew up in a wealthy family but was orphaned at the age of six. In 1891 he began to write and adopted the pseudonym Schant ( lightning ). From 1892 to 1899 he studied at the universities of Leipzig , Jena and Munich , after which he went to Paris. After stays in Tbilisi and Istanbul, he returned to Europe in 1913 and thus escaped the Armenian genocide from 1915. From 1918 to 1920, Shant was a member of the parliament of the newly founded Democratic Republic of Armenia in Yerevan . In 1921, after its incorporation into the Soviet Union , he was imprisoned. Liberated by an underground organization, he first made it to Tehran before settling in Lebanon for the rest of his life . In Beirut he was a co-founder of the Hamazkayin educational and cultural society and head of the Armenian Academy.

The two plays The Imperator and Ancient Gods are the most staged Armenian dramas.
His works were banned in the Soviet Union.
