William Carleton (born February 20, 1794 in Clogher , County Tyrone , † January 30, 1869 in Dublin ) was an Irish writer .

Life

Carleton was the son of a farmer and joined a school in Glaslough in 1811 , which was run by a related priest. At the age of 19 he finished school in 1813. A subsequent pilgrimage to Lough Derg , to Saint Patrick's Purgatory , prompted him to make his first literary attempt.

William Carleton's grave

Since this debut was very successful, he settled as a writer in Dublin and lived there until 1848. As a result of the revolutionary events, Carleton went into exile in America for several years . On his return he settled in Dublin again and died there three weeks before his 75th birthday on January 30, 1869. He was buried in the Mount Jerome cemetery .

reception

Carleton's successes lay in his vivid portrayal of the everyday life of his countrymen. However, he usually worked on his topics in a very tendentious manner , as he often took a position on current political issues in his works; for example in The Black Prophet the causes and effects of the Great Famine in Ireland or in Valentine M'Clutchy the dispute between the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches in Ireland.
