Reclams Universal Library
- November 9th : By law of the North German Confederation , all literary works whose authors died 30 or more years ago become public domain .
- November 10th : With the volumes of Faust. A tragedy and fist. Reclam-Verlag begins the second part of the tragedy by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe with the publication of Reclam's Universal Library . The first production, which was very large for the publishing house at the time, with 5,000 copies each, is as good as sold out within a few weeks, so that another 5,000 copies will be printed and delivered in December. Another 33 issues of the Universal Library will appear by the end of the year .
prose
- Thérèse Raquin , Émile Zola's third novel, appears. The work brings the author the literary breakthrough in Paris.
- Leo Tolstoy completes the original version of his epic War and Peace , but it was never published.
- The historical novel Witiko by Adalbert Stifter appears.
- After ten years of work, the Belgian writer Charles De Coster publishes La légende et les aventures héroiques joyeuses et glorieuses d'Ulenspiegel et de Lamme Goedzak au pays des Flandres et ailleurs , in which he relocates Till Eulenspiegel's adventures to Flanders during the Eighty Years War.

- Henrik Ibsen writes the dramatic poem Peer Gynt .

- Harper & Brothers publishes the first edition of the fashion magazine Harper's Bazar in the USA.

- September 14 : The first volume of Das Kapital appears. Critique of Political Economy , written by Karl Marx , published by the Hamburg publisher Otto Meissner in an initial print run of 1,000 copies, is announced in the Börsenblatt for the German book trade .
- The Africa researcher Paul Belloni Du Chaillu reports on his second trip to Africa in the years 1863-65 in his travelogue A journey to Ashango-Land and further penetration into Equatorial Africa .
