Nikolai Gretsch

Life

The son of German parents attended the Imperial Law School in Saint Petersburg. After its completion he worked for a short time from 1804 as a ministerial official, but after a short time attended lectures at the educational institute. In 1807 he became co-editor of the magazine Der Zeitgeist . From 1809 he worked as a senior teacher for Russian at the Petrischule , the main school of the Protestant Petrikirche . In 1813 he moved to the Petersburg grammar school. From 1812 he published the political and literary journal Syn otetschestwa with the support of the censorship authority , which he edited until 1838. In 1822 he wrote the first Russian literary history. From 1825 he published the Nordic bee (Северная пчела) together with Faddei Wenediktowitsch Bulgarin . Together with him and with Ossip Julian Iwanowitsch Senkowski , the three represented a kind of triumvirate in the eyes of their contemporaries, which dominated the Petersburg literature and press. Gretsch, who was often hostile to the literary avant-garde because of the protection granted to him by the state and his non-Russian origins, was nevertheless one of the most important and influential people in the Russian literary landscape of his time. However, his two novels are regarded as rather less successful works. In addition to these, he produced a number of important grammatical works on the Russian language. An attempt to create a comprehensive Russian conversation lexicon , the editorial management of which he had taken over in 1834, failed with the seventh volume. He also wrote several works on his travels through various European countries.
