Sir Ian McCartney (born April 25, 1951 in Kirkintilloch , East Dunbartonshire , Scotland ) is a former British Labor MP.

Life

From 1987 to 2010 he was a member of the British House of Commons for the Makerfield constituency ( Wigan in Manchester ). Under Prime Minister Tony Blair , he was Secretary of State ( Minister of State ) in various departments from 1997 to 2007 . He was involved, as the 1999 British minimum wage ( National Minimum Wage ) was introduced. From 2003 to 2006 he was also Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Labor Party.

When Prime Minister Gordon Brown took office in 2007, he resigned from the cabinet . He did not run for the general election in April 2010 and left parliament. Shortly thereafter, the elected Prime Minister Brown nominated McCartney for an accolade on the 2010 Dissolution Honors List . McCartney was then knighted on May 28, 2010 by Queen Elizabeth II as a Knight Bachelor ("Sir").

From his marriage to Angaharad Hope Lewes (* 1972), which he entered into in 1992 and divorced in 1998, he has a son and a daughter.
