Carl Adam Kaltenbrunner (born December 30, 1804 in Enns ; † January 5, 1867 in Vienna ) was an Austrian poet , writer , dialect researcher and 1st honorary citizen of the city of Enns.

Life

Carl Adam Kaltenbrunner, whose ancestors were scythe smiths in the Upper Austrian Kremstal , decided to forge verses. His musical talent was already discovered by his elementary school teacher in Enns and during his high school years in the Benedictine Abbey of Admont and at the Linz Lyceum he soon made his first literary steps. In Linz, where Kaltenbrunner joined the state accounts as a civil servant in 1823, he soon became an important part of the blossoming literary life in Upper Austria.

Even after his official appointment to Vienna in 1842 to the kk Hof- und Staatsdruckerei, where he worked for 25 years and rose to the position of vice director of this art institute, he remained very closely connected with his home country Upper Austria and especially with his beloved hometown Enns. In 1845 he dedicated his first (now reissued) volume of dialect poems to Upper Austrian Songs “My dear Ennsern in eahn'n kloan Stadtl bein one another, and what goes to the parish”.

In Vienna, Kaltenbrunner took an active part in the social life of the imperial capital and became a popular guest in literary circles and artistic associations such as “Die Grüne Insel”, “Aurora”, “Eintracht”, “Hesperus” etc. There were also friendly relationships to Franz Grillparzer , Adalbert Stifter , Nikolaus Lenau , Ernst von Feuchtersleben , Eduard von Bauernfeld , Prechtler etc. as well as to important painters, musicians and members of the kk Burgtheater. On various occasions he appeared there with occasional poems and made the "Obderennsischen" dialect really socially acceptable in these circles. For example with the much-acclaimed farewell poem for his friend Joseph Sellény , who in 1857 took part as a landscape painter in the two-year circumnavigation of the world with the imperial frigate “Novara”.

His professional work in the kk Hof- und Staatsdruckerei, which demanded linguistic and literary skills, also encouraged Kaltenbrunner to study languages, namely the old vernacular of his home country. He vehemently opposed the view held by certain circles at the time that the dialect was only the “sloppily” spoken standard language . In order to underpin his own thesis, he wandered through all corners of the country during his stays in Upper Austria and researched old sayings and sayings among the predominantly rural population . On hundreds of small pieces of paper, he put this linguistic cultural asset, which had been passed on from generation to generation, to paper.

Carl Adam Kaltenbrunner died on January 6, 1867 in Vienna and was in the meantime abandoned Catholic. Matzleinsdorfer Friedhof buried with great sympathy among the population. Today, Kaltenbrunner's grave is located in the grave grove of Waldmüllerpark , where a total of 100 interesting tombs of historical and artistic value have been erected.

Literary work

The literary oeuvre of Carl Adam Kaltenbrunner is altogether diverse. It includes lyrical and epic poems - mostly songs of praise to his country and his people, ballads , novellas , dramas , Upper Austrian village and folk stories. But Kaltenbrunner's strength lay in the area of dialect poetry .

Carl Adam Kaltenbrunner was a patriot. He transferred the character traits he lived by in his poem Austrian! (1859) on the whole people. So he writes in the first stanza:

“Fresh out how it's inside! Nötch'n crawl on 'n stomach, look into the eyes and göbn the hand, is Austrian custom. "

Much of what Kaltenbrunner created and left behind has not yet been processed and is in the poet's estate in the Museum Lauriacum Enns - for example the collection of proverbs and sayings based on the old vernacular in the region above the Enns .

Kaltenbrunner's work fell at a time when dialect poetry had just reached its heyday, especially in Upper Austria . In the middle of the 19th century there were around 20 dialect poets here, including Kaltenbrunner and Franz Stelzhamer .

The poet personality Carl Adam Kaltenbrunner was honored with the highest honors during his lifetime and on his 100th birthday in 1904 the citizens of Enns erected a memorial for him. To mark the 200th anniversary, the Kaltenbrunner Runde Enns honored him with the creation of a “virtual monument” on their website.

How Kaltenbrunner's entire oeuvre is recognized a. also from the fact that he was accepted by the Prussian Academy of Sciences in 2003 in their research on important German-speaking poets.
