- April 8th to 18th : The story Die Harfe im Walde by Peter Rosegger appears in the Grazer Tagespost .
- July 17 : The novel Une ville flottante ( A floating city ) by Jules Verne appears for the first time in book form together with the short story Forceurs de blocus ( The Blockade Breakers ) by the Pierre-Jules Hetzel publishing house in Paris. In this autobiographical novel, the technology enthusiast Jules Verne describes the crossing on the Great Eastern, built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, to the United States, embellishing the events a little.
- Christmas: As a sequel to Alice in Wonderland , Lewis Carroll publishes the novel Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There .
- Émile Zola publishes the novel La Fortune des Rougon ( The happiness of the Rougon family ), the first part of his 20-volume Rougon-Macquart cycle .
- Paul Heyse and Hermann Kurz publish the first volume of the German Novell Treasure .
- The Scottish pastor George MacDonald published the children's book At the Back of the North Wind ( Behind the North Wind ).
- 1871/72: George Eliot publishes the novel Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life in several episodes.

- November 1st : The comedy Der Wald by Alexander Ostrowski , published in the same year, has its world premiere at the Alexandrinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg.

- February 24 : Charles Darwin's two-volume work The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex ( The Descent of Man ) appears. In it he deals with the tribal history of humans and with sexual selection and uses the term " evolution " for the first time in one of his writings . The German translation, published in the same year, comes from the zoologist Julius Victor Carus .
- St. George Mivart publishes The Genesis of Species , in which he denies the theory of evolution developed by Charles Darwin in On the Origin of Species .
