content

Little boy Diamond travels the night with the mysterious Lady North Wind. It seems to stand for suffering and death but also for God's actions. Finally, during his illness, she leads him to the land behind her, where he experiences peace. But it turns out that this was only a shadow of the land behind her, the real land only meets him in death.

background

In this book, MacDonald explores issues such as suffering and death.

"At the Back of the North Wind" alternates between real London and a fantastic world. In doing so, it influenced the development of the fantasy genre. So CS Lewis , the author of the Chronicles of Narnia , was greatly influenced by MacDonald. The George MacDonald Society named their magazine after this children's book.

After MacDonald's son Greville, Diamond resembles MacDonald's son Maurice, who - like Diamond - died at an early age of tuberculosis, which was then widespread.
