Jessie Willcox Smith
Jessie Willcox Smith (born September 6, 1863 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ; † May 3, 1935 ibid) was an American illustrator for magazines , children's and youth literature .
Life
Jessie was the daughter of Charles Henry Smith and his wife Katherine Dewitt. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins and graduated in 1888. A year later, she started working as an illustrator for Ladies' Home Journal . In 1894 she enrolled at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (today Drexel University ) and finished her studies in 1902 under Howard Pyles at the renowned Brandywine School . In the later years she earned her living as an illustrator for posters, magazines, books for children and young people. She had a long friendship with Elizabeth Shippen Green and Violet Oakley , whom she met while studying at the Brandywine School . There the women's trio was called The red rose girls .
