Violet Oakley (born June 10, 1874 in Bergen Heights , New Jersey , † February 25, 1961 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American painter , illustrator , writer and pacifist .

Life

Violet Oakley came from a distinguished family of artists. Her parents were Arthur Edmund Oakley and Cornelia Swain, both grandfathers were members of the National Academy of Design in New York . Oakley's talent was recognized early on. In 1892 she studied at the Art Student's League in New York, a year later she went on a study trip to England and France . On her return to the United States in 1896, she enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts . Shortly thereafter, Oakley moved to Drexel University to see Howard Pyle , who admired her work, which was heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites . Violet Oakley was famous for her murals and frescoes . She later became a lecturer at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1929, Violet Oakley was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy in New York .
