La République française was a daily French newspaper .

history

It was founded on November 7th, 1871 by Léon Gambetta . He remained editor-in-chief of the paper until his death in 1882. His successor was Eugène Spuller , later France's Minister of Education and Foreign Affairs. For the period from June 16, 1900 to August 17, 1902, the newspaper was called La République . On July 12, 1924, it ceased publication.

The Viennese writer Clara Schreiber (1848–1905) wrote about the Paris press and especially about La République française in her sketches Eine Wienerin in Paris (1884) on Gambetta's death: " The» République Française «, the personal journal of the man of Cahors, was only significant as long as one looked for its views in it. Spuller and Ranc may have the will, but certainly not the strength, to continue Gambetta's intellectual legacy. "
