German novella treasure
The Deutsche Novellenschatz is a collection of novellas in several volumes that was published many times in the 19th century.
Since 1871, Paul Heyse and Hermann Kurz published the series “Deutscher Novellenschatz” (1871–1876, 24 volumes) in R. Oldenbourg Verlag . This was followed by the “Neue Deutsche Novellenschatz” (1884–1887, 24 volumes), edited by Paul Heyse and Ludwig Laistner , and the “Novellenschatz des Auslandes” (1877–1884, 14 volumes). Numerous novels that are still known today have appeared here.
The older, classic novellas are often also available in other editions. The introduction to the Deutsches Novellenschatz, in which the editors explain the “falcon theory” of the “specific that distinguishes this story from a thousand others”, which has since been associated with Paul Heyse's name, is of literary historical significance .
