- October 10 : The first edition of the work The Formation of Vegetable Mold through the Action of Worms, with Observations on Their Habits ( The Formation of Vegetable Mold Through the Action of Worms ) by Charles Darwin appears. With this book, Darwin concludes his decades of studies on the interrelationships between earthworms and soil conditions and on the behavior of these animals.
