Hans-Otto Wüster

Hans-Otto Wüster (born January 10, 1927 in Barmen ; † June 30, 1985 ) was a German physicist, the first director of the Joint European Torus .

Wüster studied physics at the University of Cologne , where he received his doctorate. From 1949 to 1956 he was at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Cologne. He then spent fifteen years at DESY , where he dealt with high-energy nuclear physics and became head of the theory group, head of data processing and director of operations . From 1971 he was Deputy Director General John Bertram Adams at CERN . During this time he was involved in setting up the 400 GeV Super Proton Synchrotron, which was completed in 1975. He then became head of the CERN Management Committee (responsible for programs, budget and planning). In 1978 he became director of the Joint European Torus (JET) in Culham, which he remained until his sudden and unexpected death in 1985.
