The Rave-Ups is an alternative rock band from Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . The band formed in 1979 and has released three studio albums since 1985. But also played concerts again and again, mainly in her home country, in the United States. The Rave-Ups combines melodic alternative rock with echoes of country music and folk . The rock band, however, has nothing to do with the later rave music genre from the 1990s, acid house and techno . The Rave-Ups are best known for their 1988 hit single, Respectfully King of Rain , as well as appearances in the John Hughes film Pretty in Pink and Beverly Hills, 90210 .

history

The Rave-Ups were originally founded at Carnegie Mellon University in the fall of 1979 by Jimmer Podrasky, who was studying English literature there at the time.

The rave-ups started with the line-up: Jimmer Podrasky (guitar, vocals), Michael Kaniecki (guitar, vocals), George Carter (bass, violin, vocals) and TJ Junco (drums). But already in January 1980, Rich Slevin replaced TJ Junco on drums, who had left the band shortly after their formation. The band played mostly original compositions written by Podrasky and Kaniecki, performed some songs by Carter and also played some cover versions in public. She made early appearances in Pittsburgh in clubs like The Electric Banana , The Decade Lounge , Carnegie Mellon , as well as regular appearances at Fat City in Swissvale . In the summer of 1980 the band made 4-track and 16-track studio demo recordings, including later popular pieces such as "Class Tramp" and "Gremlin", along with the usual live recordings of club dates. Slevin left the band in the summer of 1980 and returned to his hometown of New York City and was replaced by a colleague from Pittsburgh, Vic McPoland, while the band moved to Los Angeles, California.

The second incarnation of The Rave-Ups followed Podrasky with drummer Tim Jimenez, guitarist Chuck Wada & bassist Douglas Leonard. This formation released a six song EP entitled Class Tramp on Fun Stuff Records in 1984. All 3,000 copies of the EP produced were sold. After guitarist Chuck Wada & bassist Douglas Leonard had left the group, Terry Wilson (guitar) and Tommy Blatnik (bass) joined the band in 1985. The Rave-Ups still plays in this line-up to this day. In 1985 the band released their first studio album called Town and Country on the music label Fun Stuff Records. Over 40,000 copies of the album were sold.

Actress Molly Ringwald had become a friend and fan of the band through her sister Beth, who was in a relationship with Podrasky. Ringwald later invited film director John Hughes to take a look at the band informally and after a successful audition of the group there was an appearance for The Rave-Ups in the movie Pretty in Pink . In the film, the group plays their song Rave-Up, Shut-Up on stage. Another song from The Rave-Ups that was featured in the film was Positiv Lost Me . The band also appeared on the MTV premiere of Pretty In Pink . The Rave-Ups played Positiv Me Lost . The song became a hit, successful enough that Rhino Records placed the song on their compilation sampler Just Cant Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80s # Volume 12 . During this time the band received great acclaim from critics, including Robert Christgau and Robert Hilburn entering into negotiations with several major record labels.

In 1987 the band signed with Epic Records , releasing their major label debut with the album The Book of Your Regrets in 1988. The album sold well despite difficult corporate restructuring by Epic and a lack of promotion. In the same year, her song Class Tramp appeared in the horror anthology film From a Whisper to a Scream .

In 1990 the album Chance (named after Podrasky's son with Beth Ringwald) was released with the hope of even more commercial success. The single Respectfully King Of Rain became an alternative rock hit that made it to number 12 on MTV's Modern Rock Charts. The second single She Says (Come Around) was no longer promoted for distribution (including MusiK Video) by Epic. Then the band left the music label. The group worked for a few months on an appearance on an episode of Beverly Hills broadcast on Spring Dance episode 90210 . After some idle time and some frustration in the following period, the band even split up temporarily in 1992.

In the meantime, Jimmer Podrasky founded the band Lovin 'Miserys with Concrete Blonde drummer Harry Rushakoff, but could not achieve a contract with a music label.

In 2000 the band The Rave-Ups was revived. An album called The Salmon In The Woods was re-recorded, but this has not been released on any recording due to lack of interest from the major record companies.

Podrasky and Wilson remained musical partners in the following years. Since August 2007 they have been working on new material with their music colleagues Jimenez and Blatnik, so that the band also played their own concerts in the United States from time to time.

Jimmer Podrasky, born in Pittsburgh in 1957, is a first cousin of Chief Justice of the United States John Roberts . Podrasky now lives in Woodland Hills, California. In September 2013 he released the album The Would-Be Plans under the pseudonym Jimmer . In January 2017 he released another album called God Like the Sun. In 2019, a third solo album by Jimmer Podrasky was released under the title Almost Home, Again .
