Jakob Løkke

Jakob Løkke , Jakob Olaus Løkke, (born February 13, 1829 in Trondheim , † September 29, 1881 in Berlin ) was a Norwegian teacher and textbook author .

Life

His parents were the master joiner Ole Olsen Løkke (1799–1866) and his wife Johanna (“Hanna”) Jakobsdatter Bugge (* 1797). On January 2, 1856, he married Christiania Inger Marie Birgitte Hald (May 13, 1830– March 5, 1913), daughter of the pastor Nils Christian Hald (1808–1896) and his wife Maren Otte Fürst (1808–1892).

Jakob Løkke has been a teacher at the secondary school all his professional life, the last 20 years at the cathedral school in Christiania. His textbooks and reading books in Norwegian, English and German appeared in many editions. Some were in use in schools until the 1970s.

He spent his early youth in Trondheim. When he was ten years old, his family moved to Tromsø , where he attended secondary school there. He passed the examen artium in 1848. He then studied philology at the Christiania University. In 1852 he passed the exam. During his studies he came to the “ Det lærde Holland ” district. In 1854 he became a teacher, in 1855 an adjunct at the school in Lillehammer . In addition to his teaching profession, he ran a bookshop in the city from 1856 and was editor of the newspaper Kristians Amtstidende from 1855 to 1859 . From 1856 to 1859 he was also alternately in the city parliament, sometimes mayor and deputy mayor. In 1861 he moved back to Christiania when he got a position as an adjunct at the cathedral school. A year later he became a senior teacher at this school and its secretary. He kept these positions until death.

As a teacher he followed the classical humanistic training ideals. He was seen by his contemporaries as conservative; because he turned against the various reforms in the school system that were carried out from 1850 to the 1860s.

He soon began to write textbooks: The theory of form in the mother tongue and a grammar of the mother tongue for school use. He showed himself to be a supporter of Peter Andreas Munch in the language dispute . His books appeared in several editions during his lifetime, but soon lagged behind the development of language. In 1879 he also edited a native-language reading book for middle school with a colleague. His textbooks for German and English were in use for a long time. His first German grammar appeared in 1856, and the 31st edition of his Kurzgefße Deutsche Grammar appeared in 1965. Its English Grammar from 1867 and its Concise English Grammar from 1870 were used through 1900. Then they were revised and used until 1977. During his stay in Dresden in 1870, Ibsen had Løkke send him copies of his poems, which had appeared in Norwegian magazines.

Jakob Løkke had been a member of the “Videnskabs-Selskab” (Scientific Society) in Christiania (today “Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi”) since 1867. He became a Knight of the North Star Order in 1878 .

He died suddenly in Berlin on the way home from a spa stay in Karlsbad .
