Elisabeth Grube (born October 22, 1803 in Netphen as Elisabeth Diez ; † April 21, 1871 in Düsseldorf ) was a German poet and writer .

Life

Elisabeth Grube was born in Netphen as the daughter of the rent master Diez. At the age of twelve she wrote her first play, which she put on with friends. She got to know Schiller's works through her brother, and reading them encouraged her to write poetry. Some of Elisabeth Grube's poems appeared in Rhenish entertainment papers. In Düsseldorf, Elisabeth Diez married Friedrich Wilhelm Grube in 1823, who was a teacher and director of an educational institute in Kirchen near Siegen and who ran a lending library. The couple had three boys and two girls together. Elisabeth Grube wrote poetry and historical dramas. During the Franco-Prussian War, she cared for the wounded in the hospital. Even before that, she had been involved in the “hunger years” of 1840 and 1847 for the establishment of a “soup establishment”.

Her husband died on the island of Java in 1845 , after the Prussian government had sent him in 1843 to explore the trade links between China and East Asia . In 1848 she published his travel diary in his honor. Elisabeth Grube continued to live as a widow in Düsseldorf, where she was in close contact with her sister, the writer Katharina Diez , especially in her final years . Her grave is on the northern part of the Golzheim cemetery .
