- Before November 1st: Since he has to present his publisher with a novel by November 1st, but cannot foresee guilt and atonement , Fyodor Dostoyevsky dictates the novella The Gambler to his typist and future wife within 26 days .
- End of the year: Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel Guilt and Atonement is published.

- The Death of Ivan the Terrible ( Смерть Иоанна Грозного ) appears by Alexei Tolstoy . The piece is the prelude to a dramatic trilogy .
Poetry
Charles Baudelaire publishes Les Épaves ( Strandgut ) for enthusiasts in Belgium . These are the six poems censored in France from the collection of poems Les Fleurs du Mal , published in 1857 , plus 17 new poems. The frontispiece shows a picture by Félicien Rops , which is probably based on a design by Félix Bracquemond for the second edition, but not used. This publication is also being prosecuted in France.
The Parisian publisher Alphonse Lemerre is bringing out the first volume of the anthology Le Parnasse contemporain . The title gives its name to the literary movement of the Parnassians , who find a stage for their work here.

- February 1 : The first reports from the Danish news agency Ritzau, founded the day before, appear in the Copenhagen press .
- July: During the occupation of Frankfurt by Prussia, the Frankfurter Zeitung and Handelsblatt are banned. Editor Leopold Sonnemann moves to Stuttgart and supplies his readers with the Neue Deutsche Zeitung from there .
- November 16 : The Frankfurter Zeitung and Handelsblatt can appear again in the Frankfurter Societäts-Druckerei .
- The Russian literary and political magazine Sovremennik is banned and ceased to appear.
