Gottlieb August Crüwell

Gottlieb August Crüwell (often GA Crüwell or Gottlieb Crüwell ; born September 10, 1866 at the Leangolla country estate, Ceylon, today Sri Lanka ; † December 19, 1931 in Procida , Province of Naples , Italy ) was an Austrian historian , writer and librarian . From 1924 he was director of the university library of the University of Vienna .

Life

Crüwell studied at the University of Vienna . In 1886 he was the founder of the Corps Symposion. In Vienna he was awarded Dr. phil. PhD . In 1898 he joined the Vienna University Library as a volunteer , was later appointed to the government council and finally in 1924 to the library director. As a consultant for English studies, he acted as a mediator of Anglo-Saxon ideas in German-speaking countries from the turn of the century. He is known for the first German translation of HG Wells ' classic science fiction novel The War of the Worlds (1898), which was published in 1901 under the title Der Krieg der Welten . After the First World War , Crüwell was instrumental in rebuilding and modernizing the university library. He also edited the journal Mitteilungen of the Austrian Association for Libraries for a number of years . He belonged to the Society of Monuments of Music in Austria (dtö) and was appointed an "active member" by them in 1925 because of his services. He traveled extensively and wrote numerous essays and publications . His play Schönwiesen (1911) was also performed at the Vienna Burgtheater . He was married to Alma Crüwell-Clairmont.
