Angel's tombstone in Elisenhain

Georg Julius Leopold Engel (born October 29, 1866 in Greifswald , † October 19, 1931 in Berlin ) was a successful German writer. His novels appeared in large editions. At times he used the pseudonym Johannes Jörgensen .

Life

Georg Engel spent his youth in Breslau . After studying philosophy and history in Berlin (1887 to 1890), he worked as an art and theater critic for the Berliner Tageblatt .

From 1891 he worked as a freelance writer in Berlin. In his novel Hann Klüth (1905) and in his collection of novels The People of Moorluke (1910), the story of which is set in Greifswald and the surrounding area, he drew lively and life-affirming North German characters.

Engel's dramas are forgotten, as is his play Über den Wassern , which was performed in the Greifswald Theater in October 1916. Engel was president of the Reich Association of German Literature . This organization should contribute to the social security of freelance authors. Here he earned recognition and merits.

During the time of National Socialism , his work was considered undesirable because Engel was considered “non-Aryan” in the sense of the Nazi state. The memorial plaque on the house where he was born in Greifswald was removed, and his tombstone in Elisenhain , under which the poet's ashes lay according to his wishes, was overturned. Engel's books were removed from the libraries and burned (see 1933 book burning in Germany ). His grave was restored after 1945 and has been cared for ever since.
