Life

Gravestone in the Osterholz cemetery

Droste's father was a master tailor. Droste grew up in poor conditions in Bremen on the Osterdeich on the Weser . But humor and happiness did not leave him. After school he worked for a bookseller as an errand boy , then he did an apprenticeship in a wool company . In 1886 Droste went blind due to an inflammation of the optic nerve and from then on earned his living as a street vendor. After moving to Hanover , he did an apprenticeship as a basket maker and married in 1893. In the meantime he realized that he was good at telling stories in Low German. In 1908 his first book Achtern Diek was printed. From then on he wrote more stories for the blind using a typewriter .

From 1913 onwards, the Ottjen-Alldag books appeared, which had a lot to do with his own biography . Gradually he also gave lectures and readings. After the First World War , Droste was able to give up basketry and live from writing. His books are still being reprinted and sold today.
